(Thematic Report September: Youth and the Environment)

by Dharmendra Kapri | 27-09-2019 06:28

Youth constitute the biggest and most important segment of our society. They are very ambitious, socially active and have immense energy. They are ready to take initiatives, and don¡¯t have fear from risks.

Youth of the modern world are more than willing to work as change agent. They are full of motivation, energy and new ideas. They are already working in diverse ways to support sustainable development.

They are going to be the ones who would suffer from the ill effects of unsustainable development. They are going to live in that threatened future world. So they are also the ones who could save our common future. If youth decide to change the way they live, and they get proper guidance, it wouldn¡¯t take time to change the world.

Youth participation in environmental conservation is the need of the time. Adults are not doing their homework and they are not concerned enough for the environment. We can¡¯t wait for them to realize their responsibilities and act. Signs of climate change and climate crisis are quite visible and we are running out of time. Himalayas are melting, sea level is rising, polar bears are dying, and global temperature is rising- Is this what we are going to gift our future generation? It¡¯s high time for us youth not to rely on adults and take the charge because it¡¯s a matter of our own survival and future of coming generation, after all we don¡¯t have any planet B?

Training programs on leadership and burning environmental issues can give youth a direction because the climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our generation. By learning about burning environmental issues, we can discover strategies to face that challenge so that as change makers we can focus on meaningful and strategic issues that will really make a difference. It would help to build young people¡¯s capacity to weigh the risks and consequences for making wise decisions and becoming responsible.

Platforms like Tunza Eco Generation enable us to get involved into making decisions which would affect our lives.

Youth are not useless, but they are used less.
