The Effects of Space Heaters have on the Environment

by Paisley Hansen | 27-09-2019 06:52

Heaters are what keeps the homes warm. These objects keep the residents comfortable during the winter months. What do heaters do though to the environment? First, it is good to figure out what heaters, importantly space heaters, do to the environment.

What are Space Heaters?

Spaces heaters are heating devices that cover a small area. Space heaters are different from Central Heating that central heating covers multiple spaces. Space heaters are powered with electricity or burnable fuel. Combustible fuels are natural gas, propane, fuel oil, and wood pellets. A propane space heater is such heaters that require burnable fuels. Space heaters are also portable. Portable space heaters are small and electric. These version of space heaters has to have a permanent exhaust while burning fuel.

Under the space heater terms there three kinds:

Infrared Heater- Infrared Heaters are also known as radiant heaters. These run off of electricity. It pushes the heat onto the surface other than the air.

Convective Heater- Convection heaters transfer electricity to the heating element in the system. The heating element then become shot pushing the heat into the air. Heating elements are either metal or ceramic. This process of heating is called Joule heating. Some convective heaters have fans to help with creating air circulation. This only applies to non-oil filled space heaters. Oil-filled space heaters will not have fans.

Heat Pumps- They are similar to refrigerators and air conditioners with systems. The only main difference is that heat pumps work in reverse. Heat pumps take the heat from outdoors moving it in the homes.

How Do Space Heaters Work?

Space Heaters works how any other heaters work on the market. Every heater has its variable when producing heat. They would need a power source or fuel source to operate. The bigger the heater then greater the fuel needed. Small heaters would often need only electricity. All electric-based heaters have a resistor inputted. The electric energy would become heat after passing through the resistor.

The heat production relies heavily on whether it has a fan or not. Fans installed into heater can help bring in cold air. Cold air goes through the heating elements thus becoming heat when pushed out. Fans also help circulate the heated air around the space.

Space Heaters and it Effects on the Enviroment

The effects that space heaters have on the environment are harmful to both humans and nature. Heating based equipment has been the culprit in 57,100 home fires in the United States. It has accounted for almost 500 deaths and a thousand plus injured. Space heaters if not used properly can cause more fires, caution is highly needed. Space heaters also have to have proper ventilation. Without the right ventilation, it can produce a high amount of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide can get people sick or become deadly if breathed in way too much. All this is easily avoided with proper usage of space heaters.

To protect nature, homes, and humans ensure the following:

Space heaters are properly ventilated

The area itself has a way to ventilate the air

Keep clutter 3 feet away from heaters

Distant the heater and flammable objects from each other

Regular dust the heater from any build-up

Turn off the heater if it is not in use

Ward off the children and pets to prevent the heater from falling

These are just a few ways to make sure that fires are lessened, the loss of homes are smaller, and people can live long lives. Knowing how to manage a space heater can keep those comfortable and safe.
