[Monthly Report] Make "Action for Our Environment" an enforceable Fundamental Duty

by Ananya Singh | 24-09-2019 02:29

First of all, I'd like to thank our Mentor for choosing such a wise and thought-provoking topic for our monthly report. Since this month's theme is "Youth and Environment", I, a young climate change activist and environmental advocate, have decided to share with you all my dear green enthusiasts - my continuing commitment to the cause.

I have been raising, bolstering, and espousing the cause of "Save our Our Planet from Getting Hotter than this" since 2015. But as we all know, momentous change takes time.

So, today as a youngster like us, Greta Thunberg has finally compelled the world to hear the voice of our ailing planet, I'd like to join her in taking the cause further by putting forth a very simple yet actionable demand : Make "Action for Our Environment" an enforceable Fundamental Duty for all citizens of India.

As we all know, charity begins at home and "think global but act local", any comprehensive and sustainable change must start from the very grassroot level, the lowest stratum of the society. So, to make "climate action" (Sustainable Development Goal no. 13) an achievable goal, we need to make our existent fundamental duty no. 7 (as enshrined in our Constitution) - "To protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers, wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures" - an enforceable one. As you might already know - the fundamental duties are moral obligations and hence, are non-enforceable in nature. And when something isn't enforced or penalised upon non-compliance, people will always have the crave to do otherwise. In order to eliminate this alternative which is ultimately and definitely harmful for our environment, I'm calling all the young people to sign this petition and shoulder their responsibility for our environment.

When we make climate action an option - it's never even going to be taken seriously. If we're at all committed to the cause of climate change, we've to "enforce" this as a fundamental duty of every human for the environment. Even after the devastatingly ravaging Amazon fires, how can you even continue to sleep in indifference ?
