THEMATIC REPORT: Youth and the Environment

by Israel Adeoye | 12-09-2019 20:01

It is no news that the backbone of any nation is her youth. The  importance of youth and their contribution to the development of  a nation and its environmental sustainability can never be overemphasized.

Youths are full of strength, very intelligent and active. These qualities are very germane to the development and sustainability of our environment. The discovery of these potentials is a major  reason behind the creation of Tunza Eco-generation, an environmental networking platform for children and youth from all-round the world.

Young minds, through education and social exposure have technical knowledge and current understanding of methods that can be applied towards ensuring environmental conservation and management.

The involvement of youth into environmental conservation will be of great influence as this will foster and promote environmental activities such as campaigns, volunteering activities, public education etc.

In Nigeria for instance, despite the unfriendly attitude many turn to environmental management, we have vibrant youths that have established award winning nongovernmental organisations with specific focus on sustainable environment examples are ProtectOzone Sustainable Development Initiative, Recycle Point, Nigeria Environmental Society etc. To excellently contribute to the development of my country's environmental sector, I joined ProtectOzone Sustainable Development Initiative as a volunteer, and I'm also an Eco-generation Regional Ambassador to Nigeria. Youth all-round the world can join these relevant nongovernmental organisations or establish one where none exist in other to protect their region's environment.

Another way youth can promote and demonstrate their commitments to environmental development in their regions is by involving in public environmental education. This method can go a long way in impacting envronmental literacy to children and even aged ones around them. You can explain to the public reasons why you must not throw waste in the drainage, why indiscriminate littering and disposal of waste is bad, the damage poor can cause.

As youth with strong interest in environmental conservation, it is highly recommended that we think globally. Remember, the management and conservation of our environment is a collective responsibility.
