Monthly Event(transforming Science Education: Foldscope an origami 1$ paper microscope.

by Sandhya Adhikari | 31-08-2019 22:19

The theme of International Youth Day 2019 is ¡®¡¯Transforming Education¡¯¡¯, with this theme every young energetic, passionate youth all across the world are working for Transforming Education. I  am also one of them who is passionately working for global movement of transforming science Education on my Region.

In order to sustain our life we require basic needs like food, clothes, shelter in the absence of which we couldn¡¯t sustain properly. Now we are on the golden era of this competitive world where redeeming only basic needs is not the motif of pertain, we warrant education, a powerful weapon to fight all those exigencies through acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. If the education system goes down we could conclude that our quality is degrading. And the major challenges of today is we don¡¯t have quality education due to the more expenses. Illiteracy rate is so altitudinous in the context of developing nation due to the expenses for the education that the low class to medium class people couldn¡¯t afford. And for the practical knowledge we even don¡¯t posses the technology, which is too expensive for people to use. One of them is Microscope which is the more basic component for the evaluation of practical knowledge and education but having glance upon its expenses its too costly for those who want to work in  the microcosmos world and for children it couldn¡¯t be afford by them and to mitigate all those knot a  concept of frugal science have been developed which literally means very cheap, inexpensive, simple yet powerful innovative approach and noble philosophy that encourage design, development of ultra affordable design. The invention of the paper Microscope i.e Foldscope is an outcome of Frugal Science.

Many people of today still are  unknown about the fact of this frugal science and its uses. So for the transformation of these knowledge I gained I joined the global movement which is also one of my resolution for Tunza Eco Generation as an Ambassador. In Nepal it hasn¡¯t been a year of its launch. Especilaly my heartful gratitude goes to Mr. Anil Gautam, CEO and Founder of Foldscope Nepal who inspire and let me know about this device, driven desire to make foldscope and science accessible to every Nepalese kids and students.  So I set my journey of this global movement from my own collage. I organized presentation session as a Coordinator and presentator on the topic ¡®¡¯The use of Foldscope in the field of Agriculture and Veterinary science¡± to transform science Education from the Organization Youth Endeavor For Sustainable Agriculture as I am the board member of this organization.

Now it¡¯s the turn to clarify what actually is the Foldscope, A Foldscope is an optical paper origami 1$ microscope that can be assembled from simple components, including a sheet of paper and a lens. This device was developed by Indian born scientist Manu Prakash, an assistant professor of bioengineering at the Stanford School of medicine and Jim. The reason for developing such a Frugal science is that over billions of people are under the poverty line  every children have right to have education on no more expenses. And I also consider myself as a girl who even haven¡¯t touched microscope on my lower secondary level of my study due to the inaccessibility of such device on my collage. Now knowing this low cost microscope I find a blessings for this generation kids to pick up practical knowledge. I could just say it¡¯s the gift for science students. Having glace to its feature it is low cost about 10 thousand times cheaper than other microscope, more importantly it is made up of paper, from the environment perspective it is device for the sustainability of environment too, electricity free , light weight of 25 gram can be carried in the pocket, when you have foldscope on pocket you can feel you are carrying lab on your pocket. It works like the functional microscope with magnification of 140x to 1600x,resolution power of 2 micron. It is so durable tear resistant, physical damage , water proof device and more importantly can be used with smart phone. We could be so much benefited with this device we can conduct any research using this, we can see swinging microorganism in our environment, and the more I believe it is the window for the modern world, it has multi dimensional and multipurpose role in agriculture, veterinary science, microorganism, pathology and environment science. If we have a pilot study of Foldscope then we can see there are about 1 million foldscope user in this globe and in Nepal we believe that by 2080B.S. 100 thousand people will have foldscope on their hand as geometry box or pen. Every child is an artist by born but the problem is how to remain artist when he grows up? So for a developing countries like ours it¡¯s a blessings for school children and I promise to transform this science education to the people and kids of my reach. Now its your turn to discover this world. Lets join hand to global movement as I did lets make tomorrow child a born artist. Lets revolutionize science and science Education. Now its your turn.........Will you???????
