![]() ![]() ![]() August 5, this is a day when Nepalese celebrate a festival called naag Panchami where snakes are worshipped by hindus. The worship is offered on the fifth day of bright half of lunar month of shravana, according to the Hindu calendar. On this day, people either make snakes poster themselves or buy it which is made up of paper; worship them and paste them above the door of house. People use cow dung as an adhesive quite interesting, right? Traditionally, cow dung was used which is followed till date. Cow dung has great religious importance. Apart from this people use grasses "Cynodon dactylon" called as "duboo" in Nepali and some red colors accompanied by paddy grains and is called as "Akshyeta". People put dubo, akshyeta, cotton and small coins and fix it by cow dung in the posters and paste it on wall above the door on this day. It is totally attached to nature connecting plants, animals and human altogether. Rice pudding are prepared as prasad. This tradition was taught by my grandparents and I am very much grateful to them. This is celebrated to propitiate nagas so that people are protected and do not suffer or die due to snake bite. Snake has also great ecological significance. This festival is also regarded as the opening festival for rest of the other festivals in Nepal.
