The UAE is striving to diversify its revenue resources by moving away from oil through Vision 2021. In January 2012, under the slogan: a green economy for sustainable development, Sheikh Mohammed initiated the Green Economy initiative. Under this initiative, the UAE aims to become a worldwide hub and a productive model of the new green economy to improve the competitiveness of the country and sustainability and preserve its environment for future generations. Through this initiative, the UAE seeks to become one of the world's leading leaders in this region as well as a center for exporting and re-exporting green products and techniques and to preserve a sustainable atmosphere to promote long-term development. In addition to fresh environmental and construction measures, the initiative involves a variety of programs and policies in the fields of electricity, agriculture, investment and sustainable transport. Sheikh Mohammed seeks to create an economy that protects the environment and promotes economic development. The Green Economy initiative comprises six main areas covering a broad variety of laws, policies, programs and initiatives that are: The first green energy field is aimed at promoting renewable energy production and use. The second sector involves public policies directed at encouraging green economy investment and facilitating green product and technology manufacturing, import, export and re-export. The third area is to develop environmentally friendly urban planning measures and to increase the effectiveness of homes and buildings in an environmentally friendly manner. The fourth sector is mechanisms for coping with climate change effects, promoting organic farming, maintaining biodiversity, and protecting the ecological balance.
