Conversion on abandoned buildings and industrial plants

by Thawdar Aung | 29-07-2019 02:42

In my previous report, I explained how sustainable development is important and apart of construction too. In this report, I am going to share my experience of participating in a workshop on conversion of abandoned buildings and industrial plants.

There is a building which is still in construction in front of our university main building that postponed due to not enough budget since last 1 and half years ago. Now, our university cooperated with another university and made a workshop for this. In this workshop which lasts 10 days, we had to consider and present how we gonna change or recreate this building to something useful for students and also teachers and stuffs.

The professor from Germany was initiator, our mentor and he guided us how to implement and what to consider by explaining some examples abandoned buildings in Germany.

Out of 6 groups, our group formed with 7 students' idea was to recreate the building as a place where students and others can have their own place when the exam is near and as a place to rest during break times.

7 students included 4 Civil Engineering students and 2 Architectural Students.

The task of civil students is to estimate how the cost will be

 1)  if the building is recreated within at least  3 months as our group design planning and

2)  if the building is continued and build the whole as initial design planning.

The task of Archi students is to draw

 1)  recreational building design which includes interior design too.

2)   initial building design which added our new idea and creation.

In our recreational plan,

we will design some rooms to study quietly and for some, we will make a light-sport rooms like table tennis and chess. For the rest, it will be for art shows and a place for graffiti where everyone can draw in their own styles. We only used recycled desks and chairs for this plan as we are approaching to low-cost one and environmental friendly place.

In our continued plan,

We just changed some rooms from classroom to recreation rooms as we decided there are enough classrooms. Some will be places where students can create and invent eco-friendly things.

This is just idea workshop and we do not implement this in reality  except making well-prepared presentation at the end. But if the building is still in postponed state for a long time, we gonna make this happen and have to submit proposals to respective authorities.
