The National Centre for Meteorology, NCM in UAE oversees the Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science. This program has become quite popular with its cloud seeding operations to strengthen water security through innovative research. The UAE has been successful in increasing the number of rainy days under the country's sustainability drive. The UAE has been adopting several cloud seeding missions this year using research efforts which have yielded positive results. The NCM guides pilots to clouds which have enough moisture in them. A mixture with some salts is then released into the clouds. NCM has set up a national network of 73 automatic weather stations (AWOS) for weather monitoring, six weather radars and one upper air station. The Center has also created databases and helped develop high precision Numerical Weather Predictions and simulation software in the UAE. The NCM operates nine Beechcraft King Air C90 aircraft stationed at Al Ain Airport equipped with the latest technologies and devices needed for cloud seeding and atmospheric research. With a huge success so far this year, NCM is currently doing intensive field campaigns across the UAE to enhance knowledge of precipitation processes and how new innovations can increase rainfall. These include testing of new cloud seeding materials, deploying many advanced planes, drones, balloons and radiosondes, and the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art ¡®weather enhancement factory¡¯. The center is treading with caution as it is well aware that tinkering with the nature can be costly, too, if we go to extremes. The UAE has been successful in improving the quality of life in the emirates. The summer has become more bearable this year. |
