Another Mystery- Light Pollution

Few years back, I used to walk to my terrace and watched the sky above. At night the stars used to be so vibrant and clear. Things have changed by now. The artificial lights have created so much impact that the ground now have become more lighted. Sky appears darker.

So light pollution is excessive and inappropriate use of artificial light beans. There are four components mainly responsible for light pollution. These components may also overlap with each other.

  1. Urban Sky Glow—the brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas.

  2. Light Trespass—light falling where it is not intended, wanted, or needed.

  3. Glare—excessive brightness which causes visual discomfort. High levels of glare can decrease visibility.

  4. Clutter—bright, confusing, and excessive groupings of light sources, commonly found in over-lit urban areas. The proliferation of clutter contributes to urban sky glow, trespass, and glare.

There are many negative effects of this loss of natural light or it seems so. For instance, we need a certain interval of light and dark for our natural growth. It has been concluded from a number of research that if no light is provided human matures much earlier. This maturity is often associated with a weak immune system and different disease condition. Wild animals become more aggressive in artificial light condition. Migratory birds often lose their tract and are lost due to these artificial light.

Astronomers were among the first to record the negative impacts of wasted lighting on scientific research, but for all of us, the adverse economic and environmental impacts of wasted energy are apparent in everything from the monthly electric bill to global warming.
