Biodiversity

by Abdul Qoyyum Oriola | 15-07-2019 21:05

Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part ; this includes diversity within species and between species of ecosystems.

The definition of biodiversity refers to the amount of diversity between different plants, animals and other species in s given habitat at a particular time. The different varieties and types of animals and pants that live in the ocean is an example of biodiversity.

A more philosophical way of viewing biodiversity is this : it represents the knowledge learned by evolving species over millions of years about how to survive through the vastly varying environmental conditions.

Types of biodiversity: it includes 3 main types

Genetic diversity

Species diversity

Ecosystem diversity.

Biodiversity loss can have significant direct human health impacts if ecosystem services are no longer adequate to meet social needs, indirectly changes in ecosystem.

Reasons for loss of biodiversity;
habitation destruction is a major cause for biodiversity loss. Habitat loss is caused by deforestation, overpopulation and global warming. Species which are physically vlarge and those living in forests or ocean are more affected by habitat reduction.
