My book review took into consideration the book ¡°Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility: Global Report on Human Settlements(2013)¡±. This book has been writing by the UN-Habitat Coreteam with the contribution of external consultants and UN-Habitat Interns. The title of this book interested me a lot because our world is growing too fast with the most significant number of population, And we need to reflect on how we can create sustainable urban mobility for all. In this exercise, I focused only on the first part of the book (The Urban Mobility Challenge). Despite the increasing level of urban mobility around the world, access to economic activities is difficult. Sustainable mobility goes beyond the technical aspects of speeding up and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of transport systems. This book calls for a change of thinking in transport policy. Mobility is not just about developing transport infrastructure and services, but also about overcoming social, economic, political, and physical constraints related to traffic. The traffic jam is a result of unrestricted mobility in cities around the world and a significant factor limiting access in cities. Road congestion indicates the disjunction between soil planning and transportation systems. The development of a sustainable transport system always starts with the organization of urban space. Land use and mobility are closely linked if we want to create a sustainable transport system. Moreover, the environmental problems associated with the urban transport sector are mostly the result of its dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels. For more sustainability, cities should be compact, encourage mixed land use, and prioritize sustainable modes of mobility such as public and non-motorized transport. Achieving the goal of sustainable urban transport requires the good governance of our states. |
