BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION If you can't reuse it, refuse it. Beating plastic pollution is actually beating plastic production. We always talk about reducing plastic waste and reusing plastic materials but why not about reducing its production. Plastics are produced rapidly involving thousands of items of single use. Simply because it is disposable but what actually happens to this disposable fibre after use. Does it go away? No it doesn¡¯t. And all of it now become garbage. It takes between 500- 1000 years to get this plastic finally decomposed the rate at which these are manufactured today have already crossed limit so far. Reusing sounds creative and easily doable but it requires effort. In this busy life where people are focusing on their education, careers, start-ups and what not, only few among them are able to focus or make efforts on reusing things as it requires innovation, creative thinking and a peaceful mind. The question is, why are we still producing plastic products while trying to spread awareness about reusing these products and reduce plastic pollution, hasn't this created a cycle to first produce plastic products and consecutively increase plastic waste and then say to reuse those products and the process will go on forever. The answer is simple because plastic products are actually providing a lot of benefits in our day to day lives mostly because they are cheap. Here, comes the need of innovative thinking in whatever we do and little efforts can make huge difference. Since, we are not able to reuse used things mostly then why not to stop its production and try to find out best suitable alternatives of plastic products. If we'll involve critical thinking it'll be not that challenging to find their substitutes and we can get inspiration from anywhere like when plastic was not discovered what people used? For example, instead of plastic tea cups people used earthen cups and in a country like (India) mine where lakhs of pottery makers are living below poverty line because of lack of demand except in festival seasons, discarding plastic cups production and promoting earthen cups will improve their financial situation at the same time earthen cups will add nothing to pollution because they are superbly biodegradable. It is a well known fact of immense usage of plastic bags all over the world, plastic bags alone contribute to a 65% to overall plastic pollution of the world. But there exist a solution to every problem. Introduction of bio- degradable plastic bags are proved to be helpful these are made up of vegetable roots and perform similar work that a plastic bags do. Other than this, the discovery of shampoo bars is another example of creating sustainable environment. Shampoo bars help decrease our environmental impact by getting rid of plastic bottles. According to an article written by Trevor Nace, a Ph.D. geologist, people buy a million plastic bottles per minute and 91% of all plastic is not recycled. Shampoo bar example shows effectively, how not producing plastic is cheaper than to produce it, not only to pocket but also to the environment concerned while not even making us to compromise our needs. Incredible ideas like this can reduce plastic waste production to great extent and should be widespread and highly appreciated as well as accepted. |
