[August Thematic Report] Struggles for Food and Water in an Archipelagic State

by Baekjin Kim | 10-08-2023 06:39

Water and Food are vital needs for every living creature. With those resources, living is possible. Currently, several countries are struggling with the issues of producing food and water due to climate changes and natural disasters that happen as a consequence. Although most developed countries find their resources easily, some parts of the world are still struggling with these problems.

One of the countries that are struggling is Micronesia. According to Pacific Community, the water sanitation program reported that water quality and resultant health concerns have also been a major issue in FSM. Additionally, they reported that in April 2000, an outbreak of cholera in Pohnpei, which affected approximately 3,500 persons and caused 20 deaths, was the result of poor wastewater control. These wastewaters all were the causes of the mass industrialization of the world and globalization. Specifically, in most parts of FSM, the underground water sources have high iron content which is harmful to the citizens. (Pacific Community)

Their food stability is also in a critical situation. In Borgen Project, they described the situation as ¡°Hunger in Paradise¡±. They stated that people in Micronesia have been struggling mainly from climate change and lack of urbanization which led to food shortages. Those consequences are highly brutal to the citizens. It ultimately ruins their production and agricultural land at an alarming rate. (Borgen Project). Moreover, it takes over three years for the crops to completely grow, which subsequently ruins the whole three years of agriculture and food harvestation.

However, there are solutions to these issues. As I previously repeated countless times, the priority is grabbing the world¡¯s attention. By this, the countries will be provided with resources and materials that can help the situation and people will pay precise attention to the problems that these small nations face. Additionally, increasing education and employment opportunities can not only boost the country¡¯s economy but also increase the country¡¯s intelligence. By this, numerous different solutions can be generated at their national scale, and even spread globally. Lastly, according to Borgen Project, investing in agriculture can be one of the solutions. For instance, they can introduce hydroponics, as it heavily relies on water rather than soil and grasslands. This can be highly beneficial to Micronesia, as it is an archipelago and it is surrounded by bodies of water. Originally, water was the cause of the problems the source that frequently interfered with people¡¯s lives. However, introducing hydroponics can change Micronesian¡¯s lives more efficiently and sustainably.
