Thematic Report: Book Review

by Muskan Priya | 29-06-2019 18:25

Do you know that global climate change existed 40 years from now too but in a complete opposite situation. Some 40 years ago, the world was under the threat of getting back into ice age because of global cooling.

The chilling Stars: A New Theory Of Climate Change

This book is written by Henrik Svensmark and Nigel Calder revolves around the scientific thought about the reasons for climate change. The book is definitely related to complicated science but everything is written in a very easy reading manner.

While  the intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 4th assessment report found that the reason for increase in global climatic situations is because of dramatic increase in anthropology greenhouse gas concentration, a huge panel of scientists including Henrik Svensmark , Director of Sun Climate Research of Danish National Space Centre believed that the global climate reacts to variations in cloud which correlates with cosmic ray intensity.

In this book of 246 pages it is described that. A satellite data showed that the beliefs of Svensmark and other fellow scientists were not really true about the correlation of total cosmic rays and total  clouds cover. But Svensmark continued to develop his ideas which has now developed as a theory. After many hindrances described in the the book Svensmark has finally explained the cosmic ray theory in a strong form based on the interaction between solar activity and clouds, lying low.

In first 25 pages of the book, there is simple introduction of the different chapters explained in a inquisitive way.  The first chapter is all about climatic observations of iceman brought out from glaciers. It was not about man made global warming but that time, some 5000 years ago it was as warm as it is today. The other chapters explains about the origin and growth of cosmic rays. Because of huge critique against the his cosmic ray theory pushed him to come up with descriptions and examples. The most interesting section of the book for me was the evolution the cosmic ray theory which began with the project in motion, the solution of funding problem, building of test facilities and description of results.

Overall this book is a great example of the persistency of a scientist. The theory explained about the mechanism of solar influenced climate. This book is a perfect read for those interested in climate change debates. I highly recommend this book to all the members of Tunza- Eco Gen.

Thanks for reading!
Green Cheers! :)
