This month report is something new for me as I have never read an environmental related book in English although I read articles. Fortunately, there was a big book sale in our city last month and I bought many environmental related books. Among those books, I would like to introduce a book named ¡°Our Future Earth¡± by Curt Stager. Firstly, the contents in this book attracts me a lot. Contents include: 1. 1. Stopping the ice 2. 2. Beyond global warming 3. 3. The last great thaw 4. 4. Life in a super-greenhouse 5. 5. Future fossils 6. 6. Oceans of acid 7. 7. The rising tide 8. 8. An ice-free arctic 9. 9. The greening of Greenland 10. What about the tropics? 11. Bringing at home Let me share some of the topics based on the author point and my knowledge too. The author described that the environmental consequences of our actions today are so large, powerful, and long-lived that they cannot be fully understood from a mere century-scale point of view. I truly agreed with that. Nowadays, we are facing lots of environmental problems (like air pollution, plastic pollution, greenhouse effects and many more) more or less in many parts of the world. Whether my country or yours face one of these problems, it is about world¡¯s problem and not about one¡¯s country. Each and everyone living on this earth has the responsibilities for the earth¡¯s good health. The author asked ¡®what would global climates have been like if we had left our fossil fuels in the ground rather than burning them?¡¯. This question leaves many thoughts for me. As the fossil fuel issue is a hot topic and also scientists around the world are finding solutions for that for several years, we have not found the best answer yet but still in progress. The author stated that ¡°If we simply burn enough fossil fuels, we will warm the atmosphere enough to delay that icy disaster for thousands of years¡±. Moreover, there will be also more ice ages in the future and we have to make plan for our climatic future. The author discussed like this kind of subjects under the topic ¡°Stopping the ice¡±. Under the topic ¡°Beyond Global Warming¡±, here is what I learnt so far. No doubt we all know that carbon is forever and global warming is on center stage. How will we lessen carbon footprints and how long will it take? The author stated that ¡®What goes up must come down¡¯. Greenhouse gas concentrations trapped in the air cannot always increase because there are only a finite number of accessible carbon atoms in the world. The author also mentioned what we can expect in the near future concerning the greenhouse gases and how the earth will be in the next topic ¡° Life in a super-greenhouse¡±. The author Curt Stager explained how the planet will change in the next 100,000 years very detailed in simple way that everyone can easily understand these environmental issues. I have learnt facts that I did not know before and how we can make impact by learning more about these issues. I highly recommend this book for both environmental field related person or non-related. This book will teach you to know more about the earth we are depending on. |
