Little effort towards waste management in Zimbabwe

by Makomborero Muzunde | 14-04-2019 01:04

It does not need any environmental specialist to notice that Zimbabwe has failed when it comes to waste management. One with naked eye can see the sewage bursts, plastics and paper. Every citizen is an eye witness to the fall of the Might Great Zimbabwe that was passed to us by our ancestors. I did a research on why there is waste management in our beautiful country. Below are the main reasons behind poor waste management.

In my research, firstly I discovered that the city councils are inefficient and ineffective. The 'City Fathers' have failed their duties in creating a better Zimbabwe for the next generations. The refuse collection trucks are outdated, they were imported from other countries after they had no residual value. The second hand trucks are not efficient since they break down frequently, therefore being able to serve a small area than expected.

Furthermore the city councils are not able to properly manage the sewage pipes. The sewage pipes are old so they burst more often. Their by-laws have encouraged mass urbanization at a faster rate they cannot cope up with, creating hot spots for many problems such as cholera and society issues such as criminal activities. Is this a better Zimbabwe we are creating?

The education system is one of the reasons of poor waste management system. At schools the students are not on the importance of the environment but to be taught on non community building subjects such as mathematics. It is focused on high literacy not focusing on the threat to humanity such as waste. There are few activities to improve the environmental education such as debates, quiz and campaigns. It is a disgrace for my fellow citizens having a blind eye towards environment. Do they need any eye opener?

Probably Yes, the Environmental Agency is rotten to the core. Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is the commission with the mandate to manage the environment through having awareness campaigns and punishing the offenders of the law. It is corrupt, it cannot act in times of need, sewage and litter flooding in the streets of Harare. EMA only document laws but fail to implement them. This raise a question in people, why are they paid?

The economy is of great blame to the poor waste management system. Failure to set up the recycling companies that have a better incentive schemes. It is hard to sacrifice your health to a penny, they are being paid 50c per 5kg of plastic. Picking litter without proper safety clothing to avoid the dangers such as health threats. A penny for a life, shame my fellow Zimbabweans.

In conclusion the people of Zimbabwe are witnessing the downfall of the great country and are failing to make it fly again. Is Zimbabwean land sustainable for the next generations, let us put our hands together to bring this land back to live. A threat to mankind is waste.
