Air pollution is another environmental issue to be urgently addressed in our society, the sources of this type of environmental pollution now ranges from individuals, to families, group of people, industries, vehicles, factories etc. Air pollution takes place when substances including gases, particles or biological molecules that are harmful are released into the atmosphere. The increase in the activities that causes air pollution is disheartening and calls for immediate attention. The effects of air pollution are enormous. Some of the effects are listed as follow; It contributes greatly to climate change and global warming. It pollutes the air and makes breathing extremely difficult. It also reduces the availability of fresh oxygen in the air for respiratory use by man and animal. It reduces visibility and can result to loss of sight. It can also result to the formation of acid rain It can lead to the damage of the respiratory system of man and animal. Being fully aware of the damning effects of air pollution to man, animal and the environment, the way to prevent, control or reduce it should be our top priority as environmentalists. As compound as air pollution seems to be, it can be greatly reduced in our environment if only we are ready to play our part in ensuring sustainable environment. I have decided to write this article on air pollution in such a way that it would speak to us individually, companies and organisations, and law enforcement agencies and institutions. Hence, I have the following recommendations for individuals, Organisations and Agencies. To Individuals: A good number of the public still involve in burning of bushes, debris and unwanted materials in our homes. This is as serious as the release of unwanted gases from chemical industries because they all amount to air pollution. I recommend that as individuals, we should appropriately make use of refuse disposal facilities and systems available in our society. Personally, I have noticed that, though industries and factories are good sources of air pollution as mentioned earlier, it is a resultant effect of individual¡¯s negligence. Therefore, full compliance and obedience to new and existing environmental rules and policies are highly recommended. This would make us play part to reducing air pollution in our environment. To production Companies, Organisation and Factories: In Engineering firms, ¡°Safety first¡± is the watchword. Also in production companies and factories, I suggest ¡°Consider the environment first¡± should be their watchword. Members of staff of these companies should be environment conscious and be one of the top factors of production to be considered. The employment of environmental engineers, technologists and analyst to monitor, regulate and access the environmental impact of the production activities is recommended. To Environmental Agencies and Law Enforcement Agencies: As I have written in an earlier report, the implementation and enforcement of environmental laws and policies should be intensified. I recommend the system of operations in law enforcement agencies and environmental related institutions should have a ¡°feedback loop¡±. They should access the level of adherence and compliance to public laws and policies both by individuals and organisations. Also, unfriendly charges and strict sanctions as consequences of non-compliance to environmental policies are strongly recommended. I believe with these recommendations, air pollution in our society will be greatly reduced. |
