Environmental Aspects of Project Preparation

by Deepak Subedi | 29-03-2019 22:06

Environmental Aspects of any Projects

Project is the series of activities and task that have specific objectives to be completed within certain specifications, have defined start and end dates, have funding limits, consume resources.
Example : Airport Construction Project

While implementation of any project various aspects of the project must be analysed and one of them is Environmental aspect.
A project may cause environmental pollution in various ways
1. It may throw gaseous emissions
2.It may produce liquid and solid discharges
3.It may cause noise, heat and vibrations

Hence, environmental aspects of the project have to be examined particularly for major projects which have significant ecological implications (like power projects, irrigation projects, environment-polluting industries like brick, drug, chemical, leather processing industries)
Key issues that need to be considered in this respect are:
1. What is the likely damage caused by the project to the environment?
2. What is the cost of restoration measures required to ensure that the damage to the
environment is contained within acceptable limits?
What happened to the Arun-III project in Nepal and Narmada project in India?
1. The environmental activists opposed the execution of the project work anticipating the
environmental hazard it would have brought in the locality
2. Local people protested against the implementation of the project.
Similarly outer ring road project in Kathmandu valley, Nepal was not implemented due to the barrier posed by environmentalist, debate in Nijgadh International Airport is very high because thousands of trees will be vanish if it is implemented.
Therefore, while preparing a project one should clear that it will not damage the environmental amenity.
If it creates any hazard to the environment there should be provision for mitigating the hazards and compensation to the looser.
A project should be environmentally friendly.

Environment Impact Assessment  ( EIA ) is one of the very necessary step in implementation of any project. Is must be done in apporiate way to conserve environment and biodiversity.

EIA

As we all are strictly working for environment conservation, our duty is to look after many projects which may affect the environment in short term and long term.
Thank You.
