An Ageless Love for Recycling - How a 75 Year Old Woman Turned Plastic to Fashion.

by Rosa Domingos | 23-03-2019 23:44

Meet my name sake Rosa Ferrigno. 75-year-old Rosa has flexed her designer skills by transforming more than 300 grocery plastic bags into a matching suit. Yep, you read it... 300 plastic bags guys :D

I guess we should use all those plastic bags from underneath our kitchen sinks and give them a new life, you know what I mean?

Rosa used the brown and olive green plastic bags from a grocery store to knit the look that has a tweed-like finish, and could be an easy contender for a classic Chanel outfit in my opinion. She styles the monochrome look with matching brown ankle kitten heel bootsa chocolate brown lace shirt, topped off with gold jewellery that features a chain pendant necklace. In an interview with the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper, Rosa Ferrigno and her daughter Fran Bertalli told the publication that the skirt was made from a total of 140 plastic bags and the matching jacket from 170 bags (Mbude, 2019).

After making a braided tote bag, she wanted an outfit that complemented the accessory.

Rosa cut the plastic bags into strips and tied them together to make yarn and finished the outfit in about two months. As reported in the New York Post, Rosa thought she needed big enough knitting needles to make knitting this outfit possible and they didn¡¯t exist, so she carved her own...

...Amazing, just aw smacked!

Now that is what I call persistence to persevere!

It turns out, she's a seasoned seamstress and has been knitting and sewing since she was a child. But what she has also done, is made a huge (fashion) statement about the reusability and recyclability of plastic – which we know is a huge threat to the environment. Forbes reports that many plastics are not recyclable and those that are leave the world¡¯s oceans with 270 000 tons of plastic which will never breakdown (Mbude, 2019).

Her
Rosa's jacket and skirt were made out of close to 300 plastic bags, she's standing next to her daughter Fran.

So Rosa¡¯s actions are sure to make environmentalists happy, because very few causes are more fashionable than conscious fashion (Mbude, 2019).

I admire my namesake's intuitivity to combine her love for knitting and sewing with that of recycling. It truely warms my heart to see such acts of change.
