Nigeria is a giant country in the heart of West Africa with a climate that is eco-friendly and animal habitation supportive. It used to be home to many exotic and endangered wildlife species centuries ago, so what happened?, Why are we not on par with Zambia, Kenya or South Africa in ecotourism?. One of many reasons is lack of education of the people on the need for wildlife conservation and it's importance to the ecosystem. Other reasons include lack of government focus on ecotourism, poaching, overexploitation, bush burning and lastly poverty. It has been noted that many people across different parts of the country would butcher a whale that wash up the shore, a gorilla that strayed or an hippo that was lost. Nigerians do not know the value of the barbecue they eat when they butcher crocodile or snakes and other wildlife in the name of 'bush meat'. Wild cats are not excluded from the list of animals that suffer damning fate in the hands of hungry people or those ignorant of the need to conserve. Government is also not doing enough in terms of protection of wildlife, research or animal care in entirety. Many animals die of lack of proper care in some zoos. This is also a call for the international community to help save the wildlife of animals, there are still some endangered species currently in some parts of Nigeria, some monkey species native to Nigeria also coupled with the point that we have water bodies, mountains and cliffs and many other geoclimates that make us a rich zone for faunal growth.
