[July Thematic Report] Wildfires and the Global Boiling Era

by Seoyoon Min | 01-08-2023 04:27

Since the industrial revolution, human activities have increased the amounts of carbon dioxide emitted in to the atmosphere. Climate changes do happen within natural causes as well such as volcanic eruptions and the sun¡¯s energy; however, the serious problems that are brought about are happening due to human actions. They boost up the speed of the rising temperature. The average temperature of the Earth¡¯s surface now is about 1.1 celcius degrees warmer than it was in the late 1800s.

The climate change has always been an issue and It is becoming a more and more concerning issue lately, Last month, New York City¡¯s sky was covered in a yellow-orange haze, spreading from the ashes from the Canadian wild fires. Although we cannot specifically point out what caused the fire, the climate change makes the already-made fire worse, causing it to spread further.

To add, this July the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, emphasized the onset of the "era of global boiling." It has been confirmed by scientists this thursday that July has become the hottest month ever recorded, as declared by the World Meteorological Organization and the EU's Copernicus Earth observation program. Global temperatures during this period have broken all previous records. All these predictions of climate change and repeated warning have always happened and is consistent. Guterres says it is the uncontrollable speed that is terrifying and that the era of global warming has ended and that the era of global boiling is coming.
