Is the climate changing in Russia? - part one

by Nikolay Dagaev | 04-03-2019 23:00

Perhaps everyone is interested to know-are there any changes in the climate of such a country, which occupies the largest area in the world  –  in Russia?

A series of reports on "climate change" I want to start with the memories of my childhood. And these memories will affect only one year – 2014.

2014 is the year of the Olympic games in Sochi for all Russians. And I remember this year as a year of catastrophes.

2014 in my native region – Rostov region there were two weather cataclysms, which I remember for a lifetime. And I have no doubt that the cause of these cataclysms is global climate change.

Snow collapse

January 29, 2014. On this day the great Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born. However, all celebrations and events were canceled due to the snow collapse that occurred in the city. It's hard to believe, but in my hometown – Taganrog for a day poured snow meter, and snow machines were not.

Citizens since morning went to work on foot as the city was paralyzed from-for such quantity of snow.  My father had to clear the road with a shovel for 4 hours to get out by car! And on the way we also needed a shovel, because in some places it was impossible to pass, and then my father got out of the car and cleared the road for travel.

The city could not recover within a week. There were problems with the delivery of food and water to grocery stores. But the worst thing was lonely elderly people, as the snow filled up the door to the house, and they could not even get out of the house. In the family of our distant friends there was a tragedy-an elderly man had a heart attack, he called the doctors, and they could not get into his house. And the man died waiting for medical help.

After this incident, our family came 3 spades, to be able in case of heavy snowfall to clear the snow.

Autumn hurricane

On September 24, 2014, a hurricane hit the Krasnodar territory and Rostov region. The cities of Yeysk and Taganrog suffered the most.

Hurricane began at night and raged until the evening. He tore down roofs, pulled down huge trees and overturned cars. According to eyewitnesses, it was a nightmare. Especially the elements raged in the afternoon. Already by noon, the wind speed reached 37 m / s, which is much more than promised forecasters. The hurricane lifted not only branches of trees, but also domestic animals into the air.

Because of the strongest wind in the city fell 249 trees and six billboards. And almost all the trees were uprooted. The hurricane in Taganrog also damaged power lines and gas pipeline. My grandparents, who lived in a private house, were left without electricity and gas for a week.

Fortunately, in Taganrog there were no victims, however 25 victims, from them three children were recorded. The condition of three adult victims is serious, they are hospitalized.

In the photos you can see the consequences of these natural disasters.

Recent years have been relatively calm for my region. But it is impossible not to notice that summer became hotter, spring and autumn colder, and winter – more severe. The climate of my region in recent decades has gone from continental to sharply continental.

To be continued.
