by Jeewon Shin | 20-02-2019 23:51

Today, I would like to tell you about the species in the DMZ. In total, there are 4873 different types of species in the DMZ. They include different plants, animals and much more. The most surprising part of all is that 37% of animals and more than 70% of the birds are endangered.

A.    Animals in the DMZ

The most famous animals for being endangered are mountain goats, musk deer, half-moon bear, otter, marten, red bat, and etc. They are all hard to see in Korea and hard to see in other parts of the world. Surprisingly, all of those species are here. The most shocking part is that in this small space, more than 20% of animal species in Korea are inhabit in the DMZ.

B.    Plants in the DMZ

Studies show that more than 55% of plant species in Korea are growing in the DMZ. This shows that the diversity of the creatures in the DMZ is wider than any other ones. Another interesting fact is that 72 new species that haven¡¯t been recorded in the past have appeared recently. This means that the environment in the DMZ is still prospering.

Even though the part that there are a lot of species in the DMZ is good, there are some problems approaching us. DMZ is a still small area that isn¡¯t fully untouched by humans. Sometimes, the soldiers feed the animals and cause them not to hunt for their food. Even though things can come in, it can¡¯t get out unless it can fly. We cannot expect to have many different species because the animals and plants cannot meet different animals that have different DNA. In the DMZ, there are a lot of limitations causing a long term problem.
