OZONE DEPLETION

by Bwalya Bwalya | 20-02-2019 21:23

The ozone in the ozone layer is being broken down by chlorine atoms from chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) molecules and bromine atoms from halons. Degradation of CFC leaves a free chlorine atom. The basic cause of ozone layer depletion is that this chlorine atom then breaks up ozone molecules. Effects of ozone layer depletion are as follows : Ozone depletion is affecting the human health and environment negatively, as it allows the penetration of UV radiations to reach the Earth. These radiations can cause severe diseases in humans such as Melanoma type of skin cancer, breast cancer and leukaemia, eye damage and genetic mutations etc.Furthermore, the ozone depletion is affecting the aquatic life, biogeochemical cycles, air quality and also contributing in Global warming, but in this review paper our main focus is on the effects of ozone depletion on human health .
