Trash Collecting in the Ocean

by Ida Ayu Mas Amelia Kusumaningtyas | 20-02-2019 20:48

Little actions can accumulate into something bigger. My community and I did another episode of collecting trash whilst SCUBA diving. We did it while trying underwater photography at Pramuka Island. Usually we would be at Tidung Island, our community base, but we wanted to explore a new place thus going to Pramuka Island.

Learning underwater photography, I learned to appreciate the underwater life more. I tried all sorts of techniques the instructor had told us about. Of course I took pictures while making sure I didn¡¯t touch or ruin the corals. The picture results were beautiful. But seeing trash below is truly an eye sore. These trashes could be between corals, above it, or a bit submerged under sand, and anywhere you can think of.

My friends and I would collect trash we see underwater in hopes to reduce the existence of it. Hoping that these trashes won¡¯t be mistaken by the underwater wildlife as food, as well as to make sure corals growth wouldn¡¯t be hindered by something covering them. We would collect these trashes inside a modified net, where we would then bring them to the surface to be disposed correctly.
