Effective harnessing of the solar energy and the related technology have been developing consistently over the last few decades. Flexible solar panels are a recent innovation in this industry.

Flexible solar panels, also known as thin-film solar panels, are a variation of conventional solar panels made of photovoltaic materials but with much thinner layers. Their flexibility allows for installation on a wider variety of surfaces and locations, making them suitable for applications such as rooftops, windows, cars, drones, airplanes, and even hikers' backpacks.

Benefits of flexible solar panels include their versatility in placement, lightweight nature, and better performance in high-heat conditions. They have the potential to surpass rigid rooftop panels in efficiency and price in the future. However, at present, they face tough competition from the well-established and cost-effective rigid silicon-based panels, which are widely used in the solar industry.

The downsides of flexible solar panels include their current lower efficiency compared to conventional panels and the higher cost of certain thin-film technologies. Durability concerns and the use of toxic materials in production, like cadmium, are also issues to consider. Additionally, their lower efficiency requires more roof space, making them unsuitable for some homes.

Considering flexible solar panels might be worthwhile for those with larger homes or businesses, ample roof space, or unique installation needs. They can also be beneficial for portable applications like RVs or boats and in extreme heat and sunlight conditions. However, the availability of flexible solar panels is still limited, and their efficiency and cost need further improvement for widespread adoption.

With the advancement in technology, I expect the flexible solar panels to improve in their efficiency as well as become more affordable for the common man. Such technologies being subsidised by the governments can support their widespread use and go along way in promoting green energy.
