The Forest Prof. Wangari Maathai Fought For

by Bonface Sagini | 20-02-2019 04:25

Karura forest is a few minutes drive away from Kenya's capital, Nairobi. It covers an area of 1, 063 ha. It is one of the largest three gazetted forests in Nairobi. It is a perfect place for hiking.

I have been personally there and liked the place. It is calm and serene. It is so big you can be lost in it.

It has more than 50 kilometres of trails for walking, biking and running. It has some impressive 16000 entries per month.
The forest has five watercourses. Various species of monkeys can be spotted in the forest.

The forest wouldn't be existing today if it were not for the efforts of the late Prof. Wangari Mathai and other environmental activists. The professor was a Nobel Peace Laureate and the founder of the Green Belt Movement.

The forest land would have been grabbed for private development otherwise.
