In March 2012 oil was discovered in northern Kenya in a county known as Turkana. 10 trillion Kenyan Shillings was invested in the oil production and Kenya is poised to be the biggest oil producer in Est Africa. The first barrels from the oil wells were trucked to the refinery early 2018. This has led to economic development. infrastructure has been greatly improved and jobs have been created locally. ![]() Photo credits: Oil Price It has not been smooth however.
The local community broke into the oil site and paralyzed operations on June 29,2018. They were protesting insecurity and marginalization. There have been bandit attacks even as the oil exploration continued. They also wanted to be assured that 5 percent of the oil revenue goes to them. There have been allegations of theft. Corrupt employees smuggle crude oil out of the oil rig. Environmental degradation has happened as a result of the excavation and emission of dust and hydrocarbons. I will be keen to see how the government manages this great resource.
