by Lhamu dolma Sherpa | 29-07-2023 15:52

Tiger Day is celebrated to spread awareness to prevent the destruction caused due to habitat loss, poaching, urbanization, and deforestation. Tiger ( Panthera tigris) is one of the most endangered wildlife species in Nepal. Tiger is an umbrella species of the ecosystem. Its continued existence indicates a healthy ecosystem with a large prey base and adequate forest cover. Tigers have been facing extinction due to poaching, loss of habitat from urbanization and deforestation, and depletion of prey species.

In 2010 number of tigers in Nepal is just 121 but according to the latest census conducted in 2022 tiger population tripled and reached 355, achieving the global commitment set during the Tiger Summit in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 2010 and enhancing the possibilities of the survival of species. Now we need to focus on the coexistence of humans and wildlife by promoting community-based conservation and strengthening anti, poaching measures, and wildlife-friendly infrastructure, and management of the dispersal of the tiger population. It is crucial to educate local populations about the benefits of preserving and valuing wildlife that inhabits natural habitats.

Nepal have exceeded international achievement to tiger conservation, it is essential to shift attention to keep population stable by addressing major issues like habitat destruction wildlife criminal activities and coexistence
