Dear Readers, I wish to share an experience of my school days. Our Eco-HOD Ms. Anjum Hassan conducted a used oil recycling project in which I actively participated, contributed & motivated others to collect & deposit used cooking oil at the school collection center. Disposal of used cooking oil must be environmental friendly. Some effective steps are: First & foremost re-use the oil. Ultimately, you may cool the used cooking oil before you dispose it. Choose a non-breakable container with a resealable lid. Toss the container of used oil in the trash. Or you may: Freeze and scoop the oil into the trash. Pour the cooled oil into a plastic trash bag.
But please remember do not pour the oil down your sink. And please Keep cooking oil out of your compost.
Cooking Oil Disposal Don'ts
Don't pour oil down the drain or in the toilet. It can clog not only your pipes but also the city sewer mains. Water contaminated with oil is difficult, sometimes impossible, to treat. This means it can eventually pollute local waterways.
Don't add oil to a septic system. It can clog pipes and, worse, your distribution lines and drainage field.
Don't dispose of oil in compost bins or piles. Fats, in general, are bad for compost, and cooking oil is nothing but fat.
Don't pour hot oil into the trash. The school campaign was a great success and we were able to collect around 85 liters of used cooking oil.
My HOD was extremely happy and proud about this project. Her efforts were published in a leading local newspaper & luckily my pictures were in the print.
Dear Readers my humble request is that please do not throw used cooking oil down the drain. Please refer to suggested eco-friendly ways of disposal.
Thanks for reading. |
