Environmental Education

by Eli Quiroz | 26-01-2019 07:00

Environmental Education is a topic which is becoming more popular in Mexico. It allows individuals to explore environmental issues, fostering the necessity and responsibility of humans to protect the natural World. Nonetheless, Environmental Education is not part of programs taken on Public and private schools in Mexico.

The planet is currently facing an increasing number of environmental challenges and it is very important for the current generations to engage in problem-solving, and take action to improve the environment. In view of the need to provide Environmental Education to students in Mexico. I decided to start giving workshops and conferences for environmental awareness to Middle School and High School students. Now, I have worked with more than 600 youths from public and private Schools in my hometown. The main objective of the workshops and conferences has been to develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions. During this activities, I realized that in Mexico most people is not aware of their responsibility in respect of environmental damage. I have been shocked by the fact that most youth are/is not aware of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals, specially the Goal 13 ¡°Climate Action¡±.  However, after I finished the workshops many students came to talk to me about more activities they can do in order to help the environment. Many of them seemed interested in finding ways to decrease their ecological footprint. I shared with them the TUNZA eco-generation network.

This experience have allowed me to learn the power of share, the power of spreading our ideas and motivating others to change. One of the most touching moments for me, was when a little boy told me, that after hearing me. He really want to study Environmental Engineering in order to create new ways to protect the natural World. In addition, the school principals were grateful with me for sharing the information they invite me to continue work in their schools and referred me as a role model.

I know there is a long way to implement Environmental Education in my Country. However, I am pretty sure there is more people like me, interested in spreading environmental awareness among youth.
