Research on Effect of Priming on Drought Condition

by Kushal Naharki | 01-01-2019 13:11

Wishing you all Happy and Prosperous New Year 2019

I am an undergraduate student of Agriculture at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, TU, Nepal. We have to perform project work in Agronomy, Horticulture and Animal Science. In our last semester, we had our project work in Horticulture where we conducted the research in ¡°Effect of Pinching in yield and growth attributes of Marigold¡±. Due to several factors like problem in variety, lack of fencing and delay in harvesting we couldn¡¯t obtain the significant result but it was a great learning experience.

In this semester we have our project work in Agronomy. We are conducting research on ¡°Effect of Seed Priming by different chemicals On Germination Characteristic of Maize in Drought Condition¡±. I am more excited to this project work because it is also related to environment as this result can provide a significant solution to a climate change as there has been drastic change in the rainfall pattern due to climate change. The result is focused on how we can increase the germination of maize in drought condition by using the method of priming.

Priming is the method of treating seed with chemicals to increase the germination and vigor in the seed. With the significant change in the rainfall pattern due to climate change there has been reduction in germination of the seed due to the drought condition being created. Maize is the second most important crop of Nepal after rice and major crop of the hill region of Nepal. With the help of priming we can increase the germination test which can be the adaptation measure to climate change and ensure food security.

I will be keeping you all updated with the further information regarding the project. Currently, we taking the data¡¯s of germination of maize in different drought condition in lab created by using chemicals after by priming the maize with mannitol.

Climate Change isn¡¯t Hoax. Let¡¯s act before it¡¯s too late.
