I'm a civil engineering student. In class, we study soil mechanics. To engineers, soil is important in at least two ways. Soil is the foundation of most engineering structures. It is also a building material. Now, most of us have viewed soil as a building material, or the stuff plants grow on or simply dirt. But soil is way more important beyond that. It is home to many living organisms which have an unbelievably important role to the environment. The animals that burrow the soil aerate it enabling it to breathe carbon in and out which helps regulate greenhouse gases and combat climate change. Some organisms are known to clean certain types of pollution. Soil also stores and purifies water. ![]() Photo Credits: www.learner.org Some of the practices that damage soil include: Poor agricultural services, improper soil management, uncontrolled dumping of waste bacteria, nematode, fungal mycelium, protozoans. These practices have to stop. Soil lives matters! |
