The Barakah nuclear power plant, owned by ENEC (Emirates Nuclear Energy Cooperation) is the United Arab Emirates, no, the Arabian Gulf's first nuclear power plant station. The site is located in the western side of the UAE, about 50 km west of Ruwais, Abu Dhabi.

It has 4 APR-1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400 MW electricity) nuclear reactors which is an advanced PWR (pressurized water reactors), they are supplied by KEPCO. (Korea Electric Power Cooperation)

It all begun in 2009,

(ENEC), Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation awarded the contract for the Middle East¡¯s first nuclear power plant to a consortium of South Korean companies headed by the KEPCO, Korean Electric Power Company.

In 2011,

  • The plant's ground-breaking ceremony was held, South Korea¡¯s former President Lee Myung Bak has attended it.

In 2012,

  • construction of the first unit begun.

In 2013,

  • construction started on the second unit, which is expected to take five years.

In 2014,

  • the Barakah 1 reactor vessel was delivered onsite and site preparation works for Barakah 3 and 4 started.

In 2015,

  • the concrete-and-steel reactor containment building for Barakah 1 was completed. first concrete was poured for Unit 4.

In 2016,

  • Nawah Energy Company was established, which will be the company that will operate and maintain Units 1 to 4 at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.
  • All four units at Barakah were 70 per cent completed, according to Mohamed Al Hammadi, the chief executive of Enec, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation.

In 2017,

  • Minister of Energy Suhail Al Mazroui had said that the first reactor is 96 per cent complete
  • ENEC has announced the installation of steam generators and reactor vessels (RV) at unit 4 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. According to a statement from ENEC, these are the last to be installed at the nuclear power plant.

In 2018,

  • On January, it was announced that the first reactor was almost ready.
  • On march, South Korean President Moon Jae-in visits the UAE, during his visit he celebrated the completion of Barakah's first nuclear reactor alongside his highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed by paying a visit the Barakah power plant.
  • On November, Concrete works and heavy equipment lifting have been completed for all four project units.

Unit 1 of the UAE's Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant will commence operations in late 2019 or early 2020.

Although the Nuclear field has always interested me, I don't believe it is a major i am able to pursue or will get support for because of how risky it is due to exposure to nuclear radiations. (I don't wish to worry my parents) But, i encourage whoever is interested to take a step and give it a try! Its basically the future. I believe everything you do, every step you take, every small task you make will make a difference and contribute to the future. What I like about nuclear engineering is the fact that this major can have a huge impact, both good and bad. For bad, obviously harmful nuclear weapons and missiles. As for good, using nuclear energy as a renewable energy resource, you can take the UAE and everything you read in this report as well as South Korea as huge examples.
