Salinity & Water logging: the main reason of having different soil features in Sundarban Mangrove Forest

by shamim ahmed mridha | 16-12-2018 21:26

Soils of the Sundarbans mangrove forest differ from other island soils in that they are subjected to the effects of salinity and water-logging, which naturally affect the vegetation. Soil is in general medium textured; sandy loam, silt loam or clay loam. I along with my organisation (Eco-Network) teammates have visited sundarbans last week.

Team Eco-Network visited different spots there. Harbaria ecotourism spot is a popular one situated at the bank of Pashur river in Bagerhat district. This spot is 6 meters above than the sea level. That's why, the salinity of this area is much low. It was just 4.9 PSU. There were a lot of plant species & animal species as well like Shoila, Hargoja, Kakra, Hetal, Tiger fern, Moss etc.  Kaora & Sundori  is the most dominant plant species there. Anyone can identify this species by noticing the Nematophore of it. Royal Bengal tiger can be seen here because the salinity of the water is low. Salinity effects much on soil structure. Xerophytic plantslike Hargoja have cuticle on the leaves to retain the water in the ground. They have seen some animals there like monkey, red crab, mud skipper, wild bear, tiger deer etc.Tiger deer drinks fresh water. In Hiron point, the salinity is much & it is 15.06 PSU. That's why Goran & Kewra (plant species) is dominant here. Due to high salinity it is so tough for seed germination, that is why there were not much diversified plant species there in Hiron point.

Team Eco-Network noticed that some plastic bottles which have been thrown here & there in this forest which is too much harmful for the forest environment. They collected that bottles & took them in proper places. This kind of small activities can help to improve the environment of The largest Mangrove Forest better again as The Sundarban is the life saver for the people of Bangladesh.
