Rhino Lake is a small lake that lies in Chitwan district of Nepal, I visited the lake 2 days before and what I saw was really frustrating. Haphazardly thrown plastic bottles, wrappers and bags made me think about the future of lake. Numbers of plastics were not more but everything is people¡¯s culture, I don¡¯t know how people easily throw plastic bottle in such a beautiful lake. I recently saw a news on BBC, ¡°Dead sperm whale found in Indonesia had ingested '6 kg of plastic'¡± Isn¡¯t this a very big problem? In Nepal we haven¡¯t faced such a devastating condition due to plastic pollution, but due I can see the future, it can be worse than this news. A research showed that, only in Kathmandu forty-seven lakhs plastic bags are used and disposed of daily. In Nepal especially in Kathmandu WWF and other institutions are doing work to beat plastic pollution, but they are not fully successful. In Kathmandu, Himalayan Climate Initiative in coordination with WWF tied up with Bhat Bhateni, one of the biggest retail chains in Nepal and distributed cloth bags at a subsidized rate. The initial three months brought huge success with our sales going up and a 33% reduction in the use of plastic bags. However, the real problem emerged only a few months later, despite the increase in sales, the problem of behavior change amongst the consumers was looming large. People bought the bags but weren¡¯t using them. They realized that at the current rate, their efforts would take ages to bear fruit, so a change in approach was required and which had to be brought at the policy-making level. That is when the campaign, ¡®No thanks I carry my own bag¡¯ took shape and a ban on single-use plastics in Kathmandu was declared by the government. Such types of activities are centralized in capital or big cities of country. Large number of lakes and forest are located in remote areas too. Nepal government along with NGOs can play great role in controlling plastic pollution. As an ambassador of Tunza Eco Generation, I am trying my best for conducting awareness campaign in different school and localities. I believe lots of small effort leads to a successful moment, so all of us can beat plastic pollution if we put effort. I am planning to do something may be awareness, may be cleanliness program in Rhino Lake.
¡°Beat plastic pollution¡± Together We can.
