Population growth in the aspect of the environment

by Ishimwe Eric Josue | 12-10-2018 19:17

As I celebrated my birthday this 10th Oct, I deeply thought about stimulate growth of the global population as time pass by. As I write this report today the world population is 7.656.018.274 people grown by 64.185.286 people this year that represents 1.09% annually. The estimation has shown the increase of 83 million people annually. The country that overhead the list is China with 1.416.603.476 people of the worldwide population and Nigeria is rated the 7th worldwide and 1st in Africa with 197.300.566 people of the worldwide population.

It is fascinating that about 8000 B.C the global population was approximately 5 million, and from then up to 1 A.D it was counted for 200 million with a growth rate of under 0.05% annually. The table turns during the industrial revolution to reach one billion in 1800, two billion in 1930, three billion in 1960 and continued to grow until human beings realized potential effects behind that stimulate growth and deploy regulatory policies. The global population growth rate reached its peak in 1960s with 2% annual growth rate. It starts declining by then.

When we talk about the issue of population growth, it is accompanied with its effects. Changes to biophysical environment and ecosystem, biodiversity and natural resources are all associated with stimulate population growth in result of global warming, environmental degradation etc. it was revealed that in other to achieve below 2 degrees of global warming, the CO2 emissions that are mostly anthropogenic based should be declined at a certain level. Those anthropogenic causes have been reported as the largest emitters the burning of fossil fuels, etc.

It even gets harder for settlement which makes shelters unaffordable luxuries for poor basically in urban cities. As population undergoes this transition of high growth, they also move city to city searching for a better life that sometimes push them to the frontline of environmental challenges. When they find shelters too expensive the concentrate in suburbs leading to the development of slums. It is actually from there they end up exposed to health diseases due to poor diets, poor waste management etc.

Looking forth on how misery the world might be the moment the world will fail to achieve the drop of population growth rate, it is a terrible image that no one would wish to see. Therefore, there is a need to address this issue profoundly through the enhancement of the existing regulatory policies such as family planning strategies and the deployment of new regulatory strategies. And I am glad for the progressive track record of today whereby the annual growth rate is 1.09% dropped from 1.12% in 2017 and 1.14% in 2016. The estimation show that it might take over 200 years to double again.
