POLICIES I WOULD LIKE TO ESTABLISH FOR MY NATION

As Nigeria celebrated her 58th Independence Anniversary on Monday, October 1st, it is interesting to know that the theme of our report for this month is on policies that I would like to establish for my country to improve the environmental condition. As 1st October, 1960 marked the day Nigeria got her freedom from the British rule, it is also important to use this festive period to think deeply on the policies and regulations that can be established, and if properly implemented, it will improve the Nations? environment.

As a Nigerian with strong interest in advancing the environmental sector of my country, I have the assurance that implementation of the following policies would improve the environment of the country.

First, I would like to establish a "keep the trash till you find a bin" policy. Though there have been existing laws on proper waste disposal in the country which have little effects, this one promises to be more effective and efficient. The reason for this policy is as a result of the growing attitude of some Nigerians to dispose waste anywhere it pleases them and the need to correct such attitude.  The establishment and implementation of the "keep the trash till you find a bin" policy will ensure that very Nigerian has the manner of keeping his waste till he/she gets to the nearest bin or waste collection points for proper disposal. The policy will ensure that, even if the nearest waste bin is 1mile away, the waste would have to be kept till the bin is reached. Proper implementation of this policy will definitely keep Nigeria clean and make our nation an environmentally developed country.

Another policy I would like to establish is the "drink clean water only" policy. The consumption of unclean water has resulted to the outbreak of water-borne diseases which have claimed the lives of some and has impaired the health of many in the country. Though there are existing regulatory bodies on food and water in the country, the production of drinking water below the recommended qualities even with the approval from the regulatory bodies is still very common in the country. This policy I would like to establish aims to ensure that every Nigerian has access to clean water for consumption and no drinking water factory in the country produces drinking water that is below the recommended qualities. The first fundamental right of a Nigerian is the right to live, and if water is the one of the basic needs for survival, then, access to clean water for consumption is a must for everyone. I believe proper implementation of these policies would improve the environment of my country.

For these proposed policies of mine to be properly and effectively implemented, there are some strategic plans and practical steps that would be executed. These plans and steps would be the focus of my next report on the monthly theme for this month.

As Eco-generation regional ambassadors, the importance of our contribution to our Nations' environmental development can never be over-stressed. We should put everything in our disposal to ensure we make a change.

Once again, Happy Independence Day Nigeria.
