The wonders of global warming

by Daria Kruglova | 30-09-2018 21:19

Can global environmental issues positively affect the future of our planet? Are there any benefits of climate change for humanity, economy, and world's ecosystems? It's not completely true that the ruinous consequences of the global warming do more good than harm, however, its tiny advantages should definitely be taken into consideration.

To begin with, raising temperatures open up new horizons for agriculture, infrastructure and economy. Firstly, cultivated areas with fertile soils are expected to expand at high latitudes. To add to it, the ?shifting seasons? phenomenon could also become an advantage to some farmers as it would boost agricultural production in northern countries. A warmer climate makes it possible to grow more types of crops and increases vegetation activity. Moreover, the duration of growing seasons will last longer and will be comparable to current one in Northern Italy. Besides, raising temperatures provide new opportunities for the travel and tourism industry. Longer summers can attract a greater flow of tourists, and new tourist destinations can be created. For example, ex-permafrost areas might be used for this purpose. What is more, an ice-free Northwest Passage will providing a shipping shortcut between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The growing potential of both tourism and agricultural sector leads to a genuine improvement in the economic situation, as local income increases, and more workplaces are created.

Global warming can also raise living standards to some extent. Winters will become milder, and winter deaths will decline as temperatures warm. In fact, scientists claim, that harsh winters cause a rise in heart failures. Moreover, climate change may lower energy costs, which is especially important for the
poor, who simply cannot afford heating.

Nevertheless, the ruinous effect of climate change is obvious: rising sea levels, an increase in the number of people exposed to devastating droughts, floods and other cataclysms, biodiversity and habitat loss, - all these consequences of global worming put human survival at risk. Furthermore, they contradict ideas of Sustainable development, which are based on the principle of coevolution of the environment, society and economy.

To sum up, it's true that a warmer world could benefit certain people, species, regions and industries – at least for a period. However, these advantages should be taken into account in the context of a numerous destructive effects of climate change. Therefore, humans should fight against
global warming, but use its benefits in the process of adaptation to the changing environment.
