[June Free Report] New York City's new sanitation rules

by Seoyoon Min | 01-07-2023 06:00

To reduce trash and take care of sanitation, the department of sanitation is publishing new standards for New York City. In April 1 2023, the new rules went into effect. First, the people have to place waste out after 6:00pm. If the bags are to be put directly on the curb, trash has to be placed after 8:00pm.

As well, Eric Adams, mayor of New York has announced that new rules for trash disposal will be applied starting from July 30th. The rule requires all food related businesses to put out their trash in secure containers instead of the regular trash bags. They decided to run these actions to eliminated the mountains of food waste piled up in bags on the side walks.

The rules was first proposed in May by the Department of Sanitation. It is crucial that the containers have a secure lid to protect the trash from overflowing and the prevent the foul odor that comes from it. The containers can be stored both indoors or outside within three feet of property line. It seems that they have made sure so that the people who throw out the trash actually take care of it and have full responsibility.

The Department of Sanitation is working to keep New York City clean and healthy by recycling and disposing waste, cleaning the streets in general. They run a portfolio of programs and facilities to help New Yorkers manage waste for effectively. The New York City Department of Sanitation is the largest sanitation department in the world. They have lots of departments including the Bureau of Cleaning and Collection, Solid Waste Management, Division of Safety and Training and so on. We can see how they systematic they are and I think that it is important for the citizens to follow their lead and take more care in sanitation issues.
