The International Environmental Law (IEL) case that I would like to introduce is the ?Deepwater Horizon Litigation? in 2010. This incident began shortly after the explosion of a drilling rig called ?Deep Horizon?, which resulted in a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and has continued since April 10, 2010. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill goes by the name that we know of; the oil spill in Gulf of Mexico. This disaster is considered as the largest marine oil spill in history. Everyone did everything they could to stop the oil from harming the marine life and the environment. They had done amazing work, but couldn?t stop a number of dolphins and other marine animals from dying at a very fast rate. Some marine animals developed disabilities and studies show that animal lives which were disposed to the oil spill would have spread cardiotoxicity or other diseases to shorten their life span.
(photo = U.S. Coast Guard via Getty Images) Even though the company, or BP, which is responsible for this incident is paying huge penalty, they cannot replace the life of the innocent animals that have lost their lives in this incident nor the huge hole that they have created in the environment. I think in order to reduce the number of incidents like this we should reduce the number of offshore oil drilling. Cutting out oil habit would be hard but we need to try to use clean energy rather than fossil fuels. It will take a long time for us so that is why we should start right now. Even though it would take some time, the day when we use renewables as much as we do fossil fuels will come. The sooner we change our habit the sooner the day would come. (Despite several trials, this photo is not working. It is supposed to be the first photo in the link below.)
