Renewable energy making its foray in the job market of UKby Anishka Jha | 01-08-2018 16:26 |

The UK government has been working very hard lately to overcome the issue of climate change. The country has switched to the utilisation of solar and wind energy over nuclear energy. This has drastically helped improve the country in many aspects. Utilising renewable sources of energy has opened up the job sector by providing more jobs for people willing to work in the installation of renewable energy. Compared to fossil fuel technologies, which are typically mechanised and capital intensive, the renewable energy industry is more labor intensive. Solar panels need humans to install them and wind farms need technicians for maintenance. Therefore, more jobs are created for each unit of electricity generated from renewable sources than from fossil fuels. Wind had a particularly good year, giving weight to renewable energy leaders who are calling on the government to end its ban on wind-power subsidies. Wind power continues to dominant the renewable mix, now providing 14.8 percent of all power. This is up from 11 percent in 2016 and reflects the strong growth in offshore wind and a rush to build onshore wind farms before subsidies were cut off. Solar power provided 3.4 percent. Official UK Government data has shown that almost 30 percent of electricity is now coming from clean and renewable sources. The usage of renewable energy has increased significantly in 2017 than the rest of the years. Other countries have also started taking inspiration from UK and have started to rely of sustainable sources of energy for electricity. Germany and the UK alone accounted for 56% of the EU?s overall growth in renewables in the past three years, even though the two countries generate less than 30% of the bloc?s total electricity. They?re far outpacing other EU member states in the effort to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. |
