ALGAE REEFS IN TAIWAN

by Elizaveta Zaretskaya | 29-07-2018 13:28

Hi everyone! My name is Lisa Zaretskaya. I would like to draw your attention to my 10th report related to ALGAE REEFS IN TAIWAN.

In mid-July, we continued our environmental marathon with the students of the Tamkang University. The student Dina Chen made a report on algae reefs. Algae Reefs mainly built by the calcareous red algae, are one the most spectacular landscapes along the coastline of Taoyuan City, Taiwan. Just like the tropical coral reefs, algae reefs in Taiwan also provide similar ecological services, such as fishery, tourism, education, and coast protection.

Recently the Chinese Petroleum Cooperation decided to build a tank docking port for liquid natural gas there. This will lead to the destruction and death of Algae Reefs. The environmental NGOs and local communities have raised their concerns and protest to the city and central governments regarding the habitat destruction of mass areas of algae reefs by this petrol station developmental project.

Algae Reefs are now in great danger. They die step by step.

Thank you for your attention. Our marathon will be continued??
