International Environmental justice and Taiwan

by Elizaveta Zaretskaya | 28-07-2018 12:13

Hi everyone! My name is Lisa Zaretskaya. I would like to draw your attention to my 9th report related to International Environmental justice and Taiwan.

The environmental challenges we are facing nowadays cannot be resolved by one single nation and thus international cooperation is required. The International Environmental Partnership (IEP) aims to provide a platform for countries throughout the world to share experiences and technologies in the area of environmental protection. Since its establishment in 2014, the IEP has successfully engaged experts in various issues including groundwater and soil remediation, environmental law enforcement, electronic waste management, mercury monitoring, air quality control, climate change adaptation and environmental education.

Taiwan is one of the environmental leaders in the Asia Pacific region. Before this feat, Taiwan?s total commitment to economic growth produced one of Asia?s richest economies. In conjunction with Taiwan?s New Southbound Policy, Taiwan EPA and US EPA jointly hosted the Air Quality Management Policy Exchange Workshop from June 4th to 7th (2018) in Taipei. Taiwan and US invited more than 26 high level officials from 10 different countries to exchange information on air pollution control. Through the workshop, Southeast Asian countries share their interests on several air pollution topics, such as fund sources for implementing air pollution control, open burning, fume exhaust control in the bistro, factory pollution prevention infrastructures, and scooter emission regulations. In addition, as part of the International Environmental Partnership, US EPA is working with Taiwan EPA to develop a new South and Southeast Asia-Air Improvements in the Region (SSEA-AIR) platform. This collaboration platform will cooperate with countries and cities across South and Southeast Asia improve their technical capacity to address air pollution.

Thank you for your attention.
