Agriculture is the only source of feeding our new growing population. Modernization of agriculture is being practiced for a long period of time. The use of intensive fertilizers and high quality input is one of the important need of making the agriculture modernized. And we are all quite aware that, this is a creating a huge problem for us. Pesticide poisoning, fertilizer overdose, eutrophication, pollution are evident in all parts of our environment. A solution to this is indeed our present prime need.

Organic agriculture is a solution to all of this. There are various ways of performing organic agriculture. Vermicomposting, conpost manuring, Farm Yard manuring and other organic manure are a preferable alternative to chemical synthetic fertilizers. Most recently, we prepared vermicompost during our practical works. Vermicompost in a type of organic manure prepared from the casting of earthworms. It contains high amount of NPK and can easily be an alternative to chemical fertilizers.
Vermicomposting is done by using selected earthworm species like Eonis foetida that are fed with adequate organic matter and the castings thus obtained is used to enrich the soil quality. Some easy steps of preparing it are:
1) Preparation of composting bed that is bedded with plastic materials.
2) Organic matter like leaves, twigs, straw, kitchen residue etc are then spread over few layers.
3) The selected earthworm species id then added in each layer of organic matter.
4) A slurry of cow urine and dung is also spread over each layer to make the whole preparation moist.
5) After making 3-4 such layers it is finally covered by some straws and it is watered in weekly period.
6) The vermicompost is then prepared in about 1-2 month which can be applied as fertilizers to the soil.
