Understand the Environment for Better Conservation

by Gayatri Chhetri | 21-05-2018 01:50

It is very important to understand the conservation and protection of the environment and the different species of animals. This is mainly due to the fact that many anthropocentric activities are leading to degradation of the environment. When the environment is not healthy enough it often impacts the biodiversity. Hence, it is important to understand and be concern about the situation but at the same time, it is more crucial to understand it by practically going to the field to understand it. I am lucky to study at Royal Thimphu College where they understand and invest to take us to explore different places where conservation of flora and fauna is being done.

I got to go to Phobjikha with my friends and lectures where I got to see the habitat of the black-necked cranes. There we got an opportunity to do a water quality test to analyze the quality of the water. It was good to know that the water quality was good for the cranes when the water was tested. There we visited the crane center where many information about the cranes was available. There a documentary about the research on cranes was shown to us and later we had the opportunity to talk with the people who do research and take care of the crane's habitat.

After visiting the crane center and doing the water test we left to visit a protected forest. This forest was home to many endangered species of animals. There we met many forest rangers who were working for the well being of the area. They took us around the park to show different varieties of flora. They also taught us how to identify different plans and took us on a bird watching trip. Then we went to visit another college where they teach about natural resources management. There we saw their agricultural garden and we got understand about different research work about the environment.

Lastly, it is very important to travel and explore to understand the challenges and ways to conserve the environment. It is said that prevention is better than cure, in the similar way it will be good if we take good precautionary measures before any of the species goes endangered. Hence, to explore going to the fields will give us a better perspective to make good decisions.
