Waste Management and plastic pollution Campaign Event

by Andrew Chikaoneka | 13-05-2018 08:48

The City of Lilongwe is the administrative capital of Malawi is the largest in Malawi with a population of 669,000. It is also the fastest growing city in Malawi at 4.3% per annul (National Statistical Office, 2008'). The high rate of urbanization is not supported by a similar growth in municipal services to serve the increasing population. The result is that 66% of the City's population (of which 49% are women) live in informal settlements and other high density areas characterised by poverty and poor access to essential basic urban services such as health, water and sanitation (UN Habitat, 2008).

With a growing population, the amount of solid waste generated is also growing. It is estimated that over 350 tonnes of solid waste is generated daily in the City translating to 0.5kg of waste per capita (Mkwambisi, 2008). Plastic bags and other inorganic refuse are mixed with organic waste such as food waste and leaves and there is minimal attempt to separate it either at source or at intermediary disposal sites. This approach is weak as some potential waste can be recycled or competed.

On 11 May 12, 2018. I conducted an event about Waste Management and plastic pollution campaign. This event evolved 55 students from deferent schools based in Lilongwe the capital city of Malawi to conduct a clean-up campaign, and it was held around Kawale Masitha ground. We managed to do the clean-up. Some students who were passing by us wanted to know more on what was going on. I had an environmental talk with them and I gave them Leaflets to read more about Eco-generation. After the environmental awareness campaign.  I gave the students who attended: Leaflet, paper ruler, post-it and Eco-bag to a teacher who was with us. The event was so wonderful, educative and motivation to the students and everybody enjoyed the event.
