Open Defecation Open defecation persists in Ghana despites continous education about its effects on the society. Many Ghanaians consider the practise as a "normal' way of life. For many people in the country, this is just normal, particularly in the north of the country where about seven out of every twenty households actually have to go into the bush for toilet. For them, it's normal, it's been their way of life for generations. One Metropolis in the Northern part of the country was placed at the second position with open defecation. The Chief Director of the Northern Region Coordinating Council, Mr. Issahaku Alhassan in conjunction with the Environmental Health Sanitation Unit of the Region and other stakeholders in the region at unveiling ceremony to lunch the open defecation league table. He said this act caused the country to lost $79 million a year before last year and poses greatest danger to human health which has harmful effects for most vulnerable children. Addressing the above problems should not be a dfficult task as many people think. The people in the community both rich and less rich should helpthe community by putting up resources like money and building materials so that we can use it to build facilities that can help stopping this act at our market places, schools and other public places. Again policy makers and NGOs can make take counseling as a tool. They should make it a trouble to visit the seashores and homes and convince landlords about the disadvantages of open defecation. They should encourage them to build toilet facilities in their homes. I believed that if the above suggesions are given serious thoughts, the high turnoverr of open defecation will cease in no time
