Earth Day is one such day that binds the whole country together when it comes to protecting and nurturing our Mother Earth. Every year, this day is celebrated in forms of walkathons, recycling programs, competitions of various kinds etc. While reading articles on Earth Day celebrations across the world, I happened to come across a newspaper article with information on the measures taken by UAE to combat climate change and promote a clean and green living. EFFORTS IN THE UAE- Surveys have indicated the rising carbon foot-print levels in the UAE which lead to launch of "The Green Mobility Initiative." Through this initiative, UAE has begun promoting the adaptation of sustainable which aims to establish a market for electric and hybrid vehicles in the Emirate, and contribute to a 16 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020. DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) has successfully aided the government in the installation of green vehicle chargers at key locations such as Dubai Airports, Dubai Municipality, RTA, shopping malls, petrol stations, hotels and parking areas. These cars have been proven to emit 33% less carbon than the usual cars which has set UAE right on the track of national sustainability targets. EARTH DAY AT SCHOOL- Since the month of April was of immense significance for environmentalists all over the world, our school left no stone unturned in making Earth Day a grand success. Many events and competitions were held and students were encouraged to come forward and showcase their love for nature through their talents. I was also one of the participants and here is a monologue that I had written for which I had won the Second Prize: To my dear inhabitants I understand that you humans may have a system of ?old-age homes" to tend to the needs of the old and the uncared for. However, let me warn you, my old age is far from containment. The plight of losing my precious resources has led me to the path of destruction whose dead-end does not seem so far away. It's a pity that I am referred to as "Mother" and yet reduced to the ranks of a lifeless, polluted, and an unsafe place of habitat. It is I, who at the end suffers because of the miserable returns for my unconditional love and nourishment. My water, that has served as the elixir of life, quenching your thirst and providing livelihood to billions, stands at a place of devoid of your concern. Seeking your help. Begging for response. My waters, which once served as the divine is now taken for granted. Quite easily. My years of youth were of peace, lush greenery and one bestowed upon with the blessing of a responsible mankind. But 30 billion years into providing motherly care, have I realised that my greatest blessing may have proved to be a curse after all. Dear humans, here's an earnest request. Will you help me live a much longer life so that I may be able to protect you all? Will you help me swap that curse? From love and concern, Mother Earth |
